Questions
Good to know
Is Textfold a subscription?
No. Textfold Pro is a one-time purchase, and every 1.x update is included. The free plan has every feature with up to 10 active snippets, for as long as you like.
Why does it need the Accessibility permission?
To notice when you finish typing an abbreviation, Textfold has to see your keystrokes — that's what the Accessibility permission allows. It keeps only the last few characters in memory, never writes them to disk and never sends them anywhere. In password fields macOS hides typing from every app, so Textfold pauses there.
Does anything I type leave my Mac?
No. Textfold has no analytics and no account. It only goes online to check for updates and, if you bought Pro, to verify your license now and then. The privacy policy lists exactly what is sent.
Which apps does it work in?
Anywhere you can type text: Mail, Notes, Safari, Chrome, Slack, Notion, VS Code, Terminal, Microsoft Office and so on. You can switch it off for specific apps, and limit any snippet to the apps you choose.
Is Textfold a good TextExpander alternative?
If you work on a Mac and don't want a subscription, yes: Textfold covers snippets, fill-in forms, date math, the clipboard, cursor placement and quick search for a one-time price, and imports your TextExpander snippets. TextExpander is the better choice if you need Windows or mobile apps, or team snippet sharing. Full comparison.
Can I bring my snippets from TextExpander, Espanso or aText?
Yes. Textfold Pro imports TextExpander groups (.textexpander and the textexpander.com CSV export), Espanso match files, Apple Text Replacements and aText (.plist), and CSV. Fill-ins, dates and the cursor position are translated; anything that can't be is shown before you import.
Where are my snippets stored? Can I sync them?
Each snippet is a plain text file in a folder (Documents/Textfold Snippets by default), and groups are subfolders. With Pro you can choose any folder — put it in iCloud Drive, Dropbox or a git repo and your snippets follow you to every Mac. You can also edit the files in any text editor.
How many Macs can I use one license on?
Up to 3 Macs that you use. Moving to a new Mac? Choose "Remove from this Mac" in Settings on the old one, then activate on the new one.
Does it work on Windows or iPhone?
No — Textfold is a Mac app. Because snippets are plain text files, you can still read and edit them anywhere your sync service reaches.
What do I need to run it?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.
